Improve the culture of reading in schools
As a form of students studying at school, I must admit that we have a long way to go to make Malaysia a reading nation. At schools, I have found that most students only focus on studying and preparing for important examinations. ___12___
Although the ministry of education had introduced the literature component at the secondary level, the standard of reading leaves much to be desired. Thus, I propose that schools arrange more time for reading books, especially non-academic books such as novels and short stories which have literary values and merits. ___13___ They should be suggested as part of a regular reading campaign.
The reading culture must be trained at a young age. Admittedly some students speak and write well in English largely due to their parents' encouragement who are highly educated. A large number of students who come from poor backgrounds do not have the advantage of reading and improving their language skills. ___14___ Merely emphasizing reading is not enough. Schools must set the trend.
___15___ Each classroom should be well-stocked with books and students instructed to read at least three books in a week. The school library should also be well-stocked. Currently, school libraries mostly stock academic books. Very few popular works of fiction by great writers are stocked.
It is my belief that if the above suggestions are taken seriously by the schools as part of the extra-curriculum, a great number of students won’t feel ashamed about their language ability. ___16___ They will try their best to improve themselves without the prompting of school authorities and their teachers.
A. At least two free periods must be allocated for reading.
B. In this way, students would strengthen their writing skills.
C. These books that can enhance one's general knowledge are plenty.
D. In fact, students will eventually develop their interest in the language.
E. So schools play a great role in encouraging the reading habit among students.
F. Their reading is limited to school books so they possess restricted knowledge.
G. When students enter university they will have more time for extra-curricular activities.
【答案】12. F 13. C 14. E 15. A 16. D

【12題詳解】
上文“As a form of students studying at school, I must admit that we have a long way to go to make Malaysia a reading nation. At schools, I have found that most students only focus on studying and preparing for important examinations.(作為學(xué)生在校學(xué)習(xí)的一種形式,我必須承認,要把馬來西亞建成一個閱讀國家,我們還有很長的路要走。在學(xué)校,我發(fā)現(xiàn)大多數(shù)學(xué)生只專注于學(xué)習(xí)和準(zhǔn)備重要的考試)”,表明馬來西亞還未成為一個閱讀國家,因為多數(shù)學(xué)生在校只專注于學(xué)習(xí)和準(zhǔn)備重要的考試;F項“Their reading is limited to school books so they possess restricted knowledge.(他們的閱讀僅限于學(xué)校的課本,所以他們擁有的知識是有限的)”,說明了學(xué)生只專注于學(xué)習(xí)和準(zhǔn)備重要的考試帶來的結(jié)果。F項與前句為因果關(guān)系,語意連貫。故選F項。
13題詳解】
上文“Thus, I propose that schools arrange more time for reading books, especially non-academic books such as novels and short stories which have literary values and merits(我建議學(xué)校撥出更多時間閱讀書籍,特別是非學(xué)術(shù)書籍,如小說和短篇小說,它們具有文學(xué)價值和意義)”;C項“These books that can enhance one's general knowledge are plenty.(這些能增進一個人的常識的書籍很多)”,句中“能增進個人常識的書”指代上句中提到的“非學(xué)術(shù)類書籍”;下文“They should be suggested as part of a regular reading campaign.(它們應(yīng)該作為定期閱讀活動的一部分加以推薦)”,此句的they依舊指代上文的非學(xué)術(shù)書籍。C項在此處連貫上下文,符合語境。故選C項。
【14題詳解】
上文“A large number of students who come from poor backgrounds do not have the advantage of reading and improving their language skills. (很多來自貧困家庭的學(xué)生在閱讀和提高語言技能方面沒有優(yōu)勢)”;E項“So schools play a great role in encouraging the reading habit among students.(因此,學(xué)校在鼓勵學(xué)生養(yǎng)成閱讀習(xí)慣方面發(fā)揮著巨大的作用)”;E項與上文為因果關(guān)系;下文“Merely emphasizing reading is not enough. Schools must set the trend.(僅僅強調(diào)閱讀是不夠的。學(xué)校必須引領(lǐng)潮流)”,進一步解釋學(xué)校要把強調(diào)閱讀做扎實的重要性。故選E項。
【15題詳解】
下文“Each classroom should be well-stocked with books and students instructed to read at least three books in a week. The school library should also be well-stocked.(每間教室都應(yīng)備有充足的書籍,并要求學(xué)生每周至少閱讀三本書。學(xué)校圖書館也應(yīng)該有充足的存貨)”,表明學(xué)生可以在教室或圖書館進行閱讀,確保了閱讀的空間;A項“At least two free periods must be allocated for reading.(至少兩個空閑時間必須分配給閱讀)”,則是對閱讀時間的安排。本段主要為學(xué)校對閱讀時間和空間的具體安排,語意連貫順暢。故選A項。
【16題詳解】
上文“It is my belief that if the above suggestions are taken seriously by the schools as part of the extra-curriculum, a great number of students won’t feel ashamed about their language ability.(我相信,如果學(xué)校把以上建議作為課外活動的一部分認真對待,很多學(xué)生不會為他們的語言能力感到羞愧)”;D項“In fact, students will eventually develop their interest in the language.(事實上,學(xué)生自己最終會對這門語言產(chǎn)生興趣)”,表明學(xué)校創(chuàng)造了閱讀條件的話,學(xué)生會對語言產(chǎn)生興趣,而不會像以前因為沒有閱讀替身自己的語言能力而羞愧;下文“They will try their best to improve themselves without the prompting of school authorities and their teachers.(在沒有校方和老師的鼓勵下,學(xué)生們會盡最大努力提高自己)”,有了閱讀條件,學(xué)生不僅僅會產(chǎn)生興趣,還會盡力提升自己的閱讀能力。D項與下文為順接遞進關(guān)系,表明了在校進行課外閱讀的好處。故選D項。
